Shooting at the skatepark

A couple of days ago I tried something new: shoot bmx riders riding/jumping on a skatepark.Well, it's not completely new to me because I usually do downhill photography -people riding/jumping as well-, but the place is totally diferent. Shooting in an skatepark it's a bit tricky because you have a lot of people involved at the same time in the same place, so you can't stand wherever you want and have to be careful with other riders crossing through your point of  view and jumping only a few centimetres far from you. Obviously, if you want to set your flashes anywhere, asking is needed.

Hace un par de días probé algo nuevo: fotografiar a bmxeros montando y saltando en un skatepark. Esto no es completamente nuevo para mí porque suelo hacer fotografía de descenso -también es gente montando y saltando-, pero el sitio es totalmente diferente. Fotografiar en un skatepark es complicado porque hay un montón de gente metida al mismo tiempo en el mismo sitio, así que no puedes ponerte donde quieras y tienes que tener cuidado con otros riders que cruzan por delante de tu punto de vista y saltan a centímetros de tí. Obviamente, si quieres poner flashes en cualquier sitio, hay que preguntar.

In this "minisession", I could test a new camera -thanks Mr. Ansoar-: the Pentax K-5. And I have to say that I'm really impressed with it. The dynamic range of the sensor is huge -and when I say huge I mean 11 real steps-, the image noise is ridiculous before ISO 3200 and the handling is great -it's slightly smaller and lighter than my K-10D, so it's much better to work with in long sessions -hands will thank you- . It's even accurate when being focused and keeping the pulse becomes complicated...

En esta "minisesión" pude probar una nueva cámara -gracias Mr. Ansoar-: la Pentax K-5. Y tengo que decir que estoy realmente impresionado con ella. El rango dinámico del sensor es inmenso -y cuando digo inmenso quiero decir 11 pasos reales-, el ruido es ridículo hasta ISO 3200 y el manejo es muy bueno -es algo más pequeña y ligera que mi K-10D, por tanto mucho mejor para trabajar con ella en sesiones largas -las manos lo agradecen-. Incluso es precisa cuando se hace difícil estar centrado y mantener el pulso...

The only weakness I've found is the same as in other Pentax bodys: the AF system is not so accurate as I thought. It works MUCH better than in any other Pentax, but AF points are too wide to be absolutely precise sometimes -tends to backfocus-. Come on, Pentax, go big and put a new AF system with more than 25 AF points, it's the only thing you need to have the best cameras on the market!

El único punto débil que he encontrado es el mismo que en otros cuerpos Pentax: el sistema AF no es tan preciso como pensaba. Funciona MUCHO mejor que en cualquier otra Pentax, pero los puntos AF son demasiado amplios para tener precisión absoluta a veces -tiende al backfocus-. Vamos, Pentax, echad el resto y poned un nuevo sistema AF con más de 25 puntos, es lo único que necesitais para tener las mejores cámaras del mercado!

To conclude, and returning to the bikes thing, I have to point one thing: next time, I will not shoot anyone who is not wearing a helmet. It's sad how people jump almost two metres high not worrying about their own heads. If you don't see how dangerous this is, try one thing: Put your back against a wall and hit it -strongly- with the back of your head. That may be the effect of a fall from 20-30 cm high, so now think again about falling from two metres high.

Para acabar, y volviendo al tema de las bicis, tengo que apuntar una cosa: la próxima vez no fotografiaré a nadie que no lleve casco. Es triste cómo la gente salta casi dos metros de altura sin preocuparse de su propia cabeza. Si no veis lo peligroso que es, probad una cosa: poned la espalda contra la pared y golpead -fuerte- con la parte de detrás de la cabeza. Ese es aproximadamente el efecto de una caída a 20-30 cm de altura, así que ahora pensad otra vez en caer desde dos metros.
